4There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are different ministries, but the same Lord. 6There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people. 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.

Paul continues by discussing the diversity of spiritual gifts. He emphasizes that although there are different kinds of gifts, they all come from the same Spirit. The purpose of these gifts is the common good of the Church. Paul lists various gifts, such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues, all of which are distributed by the Holy Spirit as He wills.
Exegesis and Study
Diversity in Unity: Paul highlights the diversity of spiritual gifts, which reflects the variety of ways in which the Holy Spirit works within the Church. This diversity is not a cause for division but rather a demonstration of the richness of God’s grace. The unity of the Spirit is maintained
even in the diversity of gifts, as they all originate from the same source—the Holy Spirit.
The Common Good: The purpose of spiritual gifts is for the common good of the Church. This means that spiritual gifts are not given for personal gain or status but for the benefit of the entire body of Christ. Each gift, whether seemingly small or great, contributes to the health and growth of the Church.
Practical Application
Valuing Diverse Gifts: It is important to recognize and value the diversity of spiritual gifts within the Church. Each gift, no matter how different from another, plays a vital role in the body of Christ. We should encourage the use of all gifts and avoid elevating some gifts over others, remembering that they all come from the same Spirit and serve the same purpose.
Using Gifts for the Common Good: As we exercise our spiritual gifts, we should focus on how they can benefit others and contribute to the building up of the Church. This might involve serving in areas where our gifts are needed, encouraging others in their gifts, or working together with others to achieve common goals in ministry.
