John 14:16-17
Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.
As Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure, He assures them that they will not be left alone. He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will be with them forever. This introduction to the Holy Spirit sets the foundation for understanding the role and work of the Spirit in the life of every believer.
The term “Advocate” (Greek: Parakletos) refers to someone who is called alongside to help, comfort, and guide. Jesus promises another Advocate, indicating that the Holy Spirit will continue the work Jesus began. The Holy Spirit is described as the “Spirit of truth,” emphasizing His role in guiding believers into all truth. Unlike the world, which cannot recognize the Spirit, believers will know Him intimately, for He will dwell within them.
As believers, we are never alone. The Holy Spirit, our Advocate, lives within us, guiding us in truth and helping us navigate the complexities of life. Recognizing the Holy Spirit’s presence in our daily lives encourages us to seek His guidance in all decisions and to trust that He will lead us into all truth.
Prayer Focus: Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Spirit to guide you into all truth and to help you recognize His presence in your life.
“Lord, I thank You for the precious gift of the Holy Spirit, my Advocate. Help me to be sensitive to Your guidance, and lead me in Your truth every day. Amen.”
