Day 26 of 365 · Week 4 · Abraham’s Call and Covenant
◆
The Promise of Isaac
Genesis 17:15-22
Scripture · Genesis 17:15-22
15Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, do not call her Sarai, for her name is to be Sarah. 16And I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will descend from her.” 17Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah give birth at the age of ninety?” 18And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live under Your blessing!” 19But God replied, “Your wife Sarah will indeed bear you a son, and you are to name him Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20As for Ishmael, I have heard you, and I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21But I will establish My covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.” 22When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

God’s covenant with Abraham is further expanded in Genesis 17 with the specific promise of a son, Isaac, through whom the covenant promises would be fulfilled In this passage, God reveals that Sarah, Abraham’s wife, will bear a son, despite her old age. This promise is astonishing to Abraham, who laughs at the thought of having a child at the age of 100, and Sarah at 90. Nevertheless, God reassures him that the son will indeed come, and his name will be Isaac, meaning “he laughs.” God’s covenant will be established with Isaac, and through him, God will fulfill His promises to Abraham. God also addresses Abraham’s concern for Ishmael, his son by Hagar, assuring Abraham that Ishmael will be blessed and become the father of twelve rulers, leading to a great nation. However, the covenant will be carried through Isaac, the son of promise.
Deeper Revelations
The Power of God’s Promise: The promise of Isaac highlights God’s ability to fulfill His word against all odds. Despite Abraham and Sarah’s advanced age, God demonstrates that nothing is impossible for Him. This shows
that God’s promises are not limited by natural circumstances; His word is sovereign and powerful.
Isaac as a Type of Christ: Isaac’s birth is a miracle, pointing forward to the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. Both Isaac and Jesus were born as the fulfillment of God’s promises, and both play central roles in God’s redemptive plan. Isaac’s name, meaning “he laughs,” also reflects the joy that God’s promises bring to those who believe.
Practical Applications
Trust in God’s Timing: God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah was fulfilled in His perfect timing, despite seeming delays. Trust that God’s timing is always perfect, even when it seems delayed from a human perspective. Hold on to God’s promises, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill them in due time.
Rejoice in God’s Faithfulness: Just as Isaac’s name signifies joy, take time to rejoice in the faithfulness of God. Reflect on the ways God has fulfilled His promises in your life and let that joy strengthen your faith for the future.
