God’s Rebuke of Job’s Friends and Job’s Restoration
Job 42:7-9
Scripture · Job 42:7-9
7After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has. 8So now, take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken accurately about Me, as My servant Job has.” 9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s prayer.

Following Job’s confession, God rebukes Job’s friends for their incorrect assumptions and misguided counsel. He instructs them to offer a sacrifice and to have Job pray for them, indicating that Job has been restored to a place of favor. Job’s willingness to pray for his friends, despite their accusations, marks the beginning of his restoration.
“After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, ‘I am angry with you and your two friends because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has. So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly.’”
Exegesis and Study
God’s Rebuke of Job’s Friends: God’s rebuke of Job’s friends highlights the importance of speaking truthfully about God. Their failure to understand God’s ways led them
to wrongly accuse Job, and they are now called to repent and seek forgiveness.
Job’s Role in Their Restoration: Job’s prayer for his friends is a significant act of forgiveness and intercession. Despite the hurtful accusations they made against him, Job intercedes on their behalf, demonstrating a heart that reflects God’s grace and mercy.
Practical Application
The Importance of Right Theology: Job’s friends serve as a cautionary example of the dangers of assuming that we fully understand God’s ways. This reminds us of the importance of humility in our theology and the need to speak carefully about God, especially when offering counsel to others.
Forgiveness and Intercession: Job’s willingness to pray for his friends teaches us the importance of forgiveness and intercession, even for those who have wronged us. In our own lives, we are called to forgive others and to pray for them, reflecting the grace that we have received from God.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Right Understanding and Humility: Ask God to help you grow in your understanding of Him, while maintaining a humble recognition of your limitations. Pray for the wisdom to speak truthfully about God and to offer counsel that is rooted in Scripture and humility.
Pray for the Grace to Forgive: Reflect on any relationships where forgiveness is needed. Pray for the grace
to forgive those who have wronged you and for the ability to intercede for them, following Job’s example.
