31But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way. 1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. 6Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when the perfect comes, the partial passes away. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside childish ways. 12Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.

Paul’s conclusion to his discussion on spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:31b—where he transitions into the famous “love chapter” (1 Corinthians 13)—is a reminder that love is the most excellent way to exercise any gift. As believers, we are called to put love into action within the body of Christ, ensuring that all our efforts are rooted in and motivated by love.
Exegesis and Study
The Most Excellent Way: Paul’s introduction to the love chapter indicates that love is not just an addition to spiritual gifts but the very essence of how they should be exercised. Love is the supreme virtue that binds everything together in perfect harmony (Colossians 3:14). Without love, the exercise of spiritual gifts can lead to pride, division, and ineffectiveness.
Love in Action: Paul’s detailed description of love in 1 Corinthians 13 emphasizes that love is active and practical. It is not merely a feeling or emotion but is demonstrated through actions that seek the good of others.
Love is the driving force behind all Christian behavior and is the hallmark of true discipleship (John 13:35).
Practical Application
Letting Love Lead: In every ministry, service, or relationship within the Church, love must take the lead. This means being intentional about considering others’ needs, being patient and kind in all interactions, and seeking to build others up rather than tearing them down. Love should be the filter through which all decisions and actions are made, ensuring that they align with God’s will and reflect His character.
Living Out Love in Everyday Life: Beyond the Church, believers are called to live out love in their everyday lives. This can involve showing kindness to strangers, being patient with those who are difficult, and extending forgiveness to those who have wronged us. By living out love in practical ways, we reflect the heart of God to the world and draw others to Christ.
