Day 222 of 365 · Week 32 · The Proverbs of Solomon
◆
Peter’s Second Sermon
Acts 3:11-26
Scripture · Acts 3:11-26
11While the man clung to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and ran to them in the walkway called Solomon’s Colonnade. 12And when Peter saw this, he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why are you surprised by this? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus. You handed Him over and rejected Him before Pilate, even though he had decided to release Him. 14You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15You killed the Author of life, but God raised Him from the dead, and we are witnesses of this fact. 16By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know has been made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given him this complete healing in your presence. 17And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18But in this way God has fulfilled what He foretold through all the prophets, saying that His Christ would suffer. 19Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, 20that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus, the Christ, who has been appointed for you. 21Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets. 22For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He tells you. 23Everyone who does not listen to Him will be completely cut off from among his people.’ 24Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have proclaimed these days. 25And you are sons of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers when He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ 26When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Following the healing of the lame beggar, Peter seizes the opportunity to preach to the astonished crowd gathered in Solomon’s Colonnade. He calls the people to repentance and faith in Jesus, explaining that the miracle they witnessed is a sign of the fulfillment of God’s promises through the prophets.
Exegesis and Study
Call to Repentance: Peter’s sermon continues the theme of repentance, urging the people to turn from their sins and turn to God. He explains that through repentance and faith in Jesus, their sins can be forgiven, and they can experience “times of refreshing” from the Lord. This reflects the ongoing message of the early Church: that forgiveness,
renewal, and restoration are available to all through Jesus Christ.
The Fulfillment of Prophecy: Peter emphasizes that Jesus is the fulfillment of the promises made by God through the prophets. By pointing to the Old Testament scriptures, Peter connects the current events to God’s redemptive plan, showing that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah who will ultimately bring about the restoration of all things.
Practical Application
Proclaiming the Message of Repentance: Peter’s bold proclamation challenges us to share the message of repentance and forgiveness with those around us. In a world that often downplays the seriousness of sin, we are called to lovingly but truthfully call people to turn to God, offering the hope of forgiveness and new life in Christ. Practically, this might involve having difficult but necessary conversations with friends or family members or reaching out to those who are struggling with guilt and shame.
Connecting the Gospel to God’s Redemptive Plan: Like Peter, we should seek to connect the message of the gospel to the broader narrative of God’s redemptive plan. Understanding how Jesus fulfills the promises of Scripture deepens our faith and provides a compelling reason for others to believe. This might involve studying the Bible more deeply, learning how the Old Testament points to Christ, and sharing these insights with others.
Prayer Guide
Pray for Boldness to Proclaim Repentance: Ask God for the boldness and wisdom to share the message of repentance with those around you. Pray for opportunities to speak truth into the lives of others, offering them the hope of forgiveness and renewal in Christ.
Pray for Deeper Understanding of Scripture: Reflect on the importance of understanding how Jesus fulfills the promises of Scripture. Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s Word and the ability to connect the gospel to God’s overarching plan of redemption.
