13You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Following the Beatitudes, Jesus uses the metaphors of salt and light to describe the role of His followers in the world. These metaphors emphasize the transformative influence that disciples of Jesus are meant to have, as they live out the values of the Kingdom in a world that often opposes them.
Exegesis and Study
Salt of the Earth: Salt in the ancient world was valuable for its preservative properties and its ability to enhance flavor. Jesus’ followers are called to be the “salt of the earth,” preserving what is good and bringing out the best
in the world around them. However, if salt loses its saltiness, it becomes useless—a warning to believers to maintain their distinctive Christian character and influence.
Light of the World: The metaphor of light highlights the visibility and impact of a believer’s life. Just as a lamp is placed on a stand to give light to everyone in the house, so too are Jesus’ followers to live in such a way that their good deeds are visible, leading others to glorify God. This teaching emphasizes the public nature of discipleship— our lives should reflect the light of Christ and draw others to Him.
Prayer Guide
Pray for a Salty Life: Ask God to help you live as the “salt of the earth,” preserving what is good and bringing out the best in the world around you. Pray that your life would have a positive, transformative influence on others.
Pray for Boldness to Shine Your Light: Reflect on how you can be a “light of the world” in your daily life. Pray for the boldness to let your light shine, not hiding your faith, but living it out in such a way that others are drawn to God through your example.
