14When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, went out to execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel responded with discretion and tact. 15“Why is the decree from the king so harsh?” he asked. Then Arioch explained the situation to Daniel. 16So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him some time, so that he could give him the interpretation. 17Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 18urging them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven 20and declared: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. 21He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. 22He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him. 23To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, because You have given me wisdom and power. And now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”

Exegesis and Study
The Power of Prayer: Daniel’s immediate response to the crisis is to gather his friends and pray. This demonstrates the importance of seeking God’s guidance and
intervention in times of trouble. Their collective prayer reflects their reliance on God’s mercy and their faith that He alone can reveal the mysteries that confound human understanding.
God’s Revelation: God’s response to their prayer is to reveal the mystery of the king’s dream to Daniel. This divine revelation underscores the principle that God is the source of all wisdom and knowledge, and that He reveals deep and hidden things to those who seek Him. Daniel’s praise highlights God’s sovereignty over all things, including the rise and fall of kings and kingdoms.
Daniel’s Praise: After receiving the revelation, Daniel’s first response is one of gratitude and praise. He acknowledges that wisdom and power belong to God alone, and he thanks God for revealing the mystery of the king’s dream. Daniel’s prayer of praise is a reminder that all wisdom and insight come from God, and it encourages us to respond with humility and thankfulness when God grants us understanding.
