Daniel’s Commitment to God
Daniel 1:1-7
Scripture · Daniel 1:1-7
1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried these off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, where he put them in the treasury of his god. 3Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace—and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans. 5The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service. 6Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 7The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

The story of Daniel begins with the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem and the exile of many young Hebrews, including Daniel and his friends. They are selected to be trained for service in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court, where they are given new names and are expected to adopt Babylonian customs. However, Daniel and his friends remain committed to their faith and heritage.
Exegesis and Study
Cultural Assimilation vs. Spiritual Integrity: The Babylonians attempt to assimilate Daniel and his friends into their culture by teaching them Babylonian language, literature, and customs, and by giving them new names that reflect Babylonian gods. This process is designed to erase their Hebrew identity and integrate them fully into Babylonian society. However, Daniel and his friends maintain their commitment to God, demonstrating that true wisdom involves discernment and the ability to navigate a foreign culture without compromising one’s faith.
Significance of Names: The change of names signifies an attempt to redefine Daniel and his friends’ identities. However, despite the outward changes imposed on them, they retain their inner allegiance to God. This is a crucial aspect of wisdom—to hold fast to one’s true identity in God, even when external circumstances pressure one to conform to worldly standards.
