The Refusal to Bow, Daniel 3:8-12

Scripture · Daniel 3:8-12

8At this time some astrologers came forward and maliciously accused the Jews, 9saying to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, may you live forever! 10You, O king, have issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the golden statue, 11and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into the blazing fiery furnace. 12But there are some Jews you have appointed to manage the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—who have ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”

Berean Standard Bible (BSB), public domain.

Despite the king’s decree and the threat of death, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse to bow down and worship the golden image. Their refusal is soon reported to Nebuchadnezzar by some of the king’s officials, who accuse them of defying the king’s command.

Exegesis and Study

hostility that the Jewish exiles faced in Babylon. The fact that these men had been promoted to positions of authority (Daniel 2:49) likely fueled resentment among the native Babylonians. Their refusal to worship the golden image is portrayed as a direct affront to the king’s authority and the religious practices of the empire.
