The Victory at Jericho
Joshua 6:15-21
Scripture · Joshua 6:15-21
15Then on the seventh day, they got up at dawn and marched around the city seven times in the same manner. That was the only day they circled the city seven times. 16After the seventh time around, the priests blew the horns, and Joshua commanded the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city! 17Now the city and everything in it must be devoted to the LORD for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all those with her in her house will live, because she hid the spies we sent. 18But keep away from the things devoted to destruction, lest you yourself be set apart for destruction. If you take any of these, you will set apart the camp of Israel for destruction and bring disaster upon it. 19For all the silver and gold and all the articles of bronze and iron are holy to the LORD; they must go into His treasury.” 20So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great shout, and the wall collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it. 21With the edge of the sword they devoted to destruction everything in the city—man and woman, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys.

On the seventh day, following God’s instructions, the Israelites march around Jericho seven times. When the priests blow the trumpets and the people shout, the walls of Jericho collapse, allowing the Israelites to enter the city and take it. This victory is a clear demonstration of God’s power and faithfulness to His promises.
“On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, ‘Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent.’”
Exegesis and Study
The Collapse of the Walls: The collapse of Jericho’s walls is a miraculous event that underscores the power of God to bring down even the most formidable obstacles. This victory was not achieved through human
strength or conventional warfare but through obedience to God’s command and reliance on His power. The event serves as a reminder that no barrier is too great for God to overcome when His people trust and obey Him.
The Devotion of the City to God: Joshua’s command that the city and all within it be devoted to the Lord reflects the concept of “herem,” where something is set apart for God, often through destruction. This act underscores the holiness of God and the seriousness with which He views sin and idolatry. It also serves as a reminder to the Israelites of the importance of remaining pure and devoted to God as they settle in the Promised Land.
