Understanding the Parable’s Context, Luke 18:1-3

Scripture · Luke 18:1-3

1Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray at all times and not lose heart: 2“In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept appealing to him, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’

Before diving into the parable itself, it’s crucial to understand the context in which Jesus presents it. Luke introduces the parable with a clear purpose: “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). This sets the stage for the story, emphasizing that Jesus is teaching a lesson about the importance of persistence in prayer and the need to remain steadfast even when answers are delayed.

with God, who is righteous, just, and compassionate. By setting up such a stark contrast, Jesus emphasizes that if even an unjust judge can be moved by persistence, how much more will a just and loving God respond to His children’s persistent prayers.
