24At the command of the king, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought and thrown into the den of lions—they and their children and wives. And before they had reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones. 25Then King Darius wrote to the people of every nation and language throughout the land: “May your prosperity abound. 26I hereby decree that in every part of my kingdom, men are to tremble in fear before the God of Daniel: For He is the living God, and He endures forever; His kingdom will never be destroyed, and His dominion will never end. 27He delivers and rescues; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth, for He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

After Daniel is lifted out of the lion’s den unharmed, King Darius orders that the men who had falsely accused Daniel, along with their families, be thrown into the lion’s den. Unlike Daniel, they are not protected, and the lions overpower them before they even reach the floor of the den. Following this, King Darius issues a decree to all the peoples, nations, and languages in his kingdom, declaring: “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. He rescues and He saves; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions” (Daniel 6:26-27).
Exegetical Viewpoints
Divine Justice: The fate of Daniel’s accusers is an example of divine justice. Their plot to destroy Daniel backfires, leading to their own destruction. This outcome reinforces the biblical principle that those who dig a pit for others often fall into it themselves (Proverbs 26:27).
The Impact of Daniel’s Deliverance: King Darius’s decree is a powerful testament to the impact of
Daniel’s deliverance. It shows how one man’s faithfulness can lead to the acknowledgment of God’s power and sovereignty on a national scale. The king’s decree not only recognizes the God of Daniel but also commands that He be revered throughout the entire kingdom.
Practical Applications
Trust in God’s Justice: When wronged or falsely accused, trust that God sees and will ultimately bring about justice. While it may not always happen immediately, God’s timing is perfect, and He will vindicate those who are faithful to Him.
Use Your Testimony to Influence Others: Like King Darius, use your experiences of God’s deliverance to influence others. Whether through formal declarations, conversations, or written testimony, share how God has worked in your life to encourage others to recognize and revere Him.
