Daniel’s Integrity and the Jealous Conspiracy
Daniel 6:1-5
Scripture · Daniel 6:1-5
1Now it pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2and over them three administrators, including Daniel, to whom these satraps were accountable so that the king would not suffer loss. 3Soon, by his extraordinary spirit, Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators and satraps. So the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4Thus the administrators and satraps sought a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no charge or corruption, because he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him. 5Finally these men said, “We will never find any charge against this Daniel unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”

The story begins with Daniel’s position in the kingdom of Medo-Persia. King Darius appoints 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom is Daniel. Because of Daniel’s exceptional qualities, the king plans to set him over the entire kingdom. This decision stirs jealousy among the other officials, who seek to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs. However, Daniel’s integrity is so impeccable that they cannot find any corruption or negligence in him. The only way they believe they can trap Daniel is through his devotion to God.
Exegetical Viewpoints
Daniel’s Integrity: The text highlights Daniel’s integrity, which is described as being so thorough that his enemies cannot find any fault in him. This integrity is a key characteristic that defines Daniel throughout the book and makes him stand out even in a pagan government. His unwavering commitment to righteousness and honesty makes him a target for those who are jealous of his position and favor with the king.
Jealousy as a Catalyst for Conspiracy: The other officials’ jealousy of Daniel’s success and favor leads
them to conspire against him. This reflects a common human tendency to undermine others when one feels threatened by their success. The officials recognize that the only way to bring Daniel down is to exploit his faith, knowing that he will not compromise his devotion to God.
Practical Applications
Cultivate Integrity: Like Daniel, strive to live a life of integrity in all areas, whether in your personal life, work, or spiritual journey. Let your commitment to righteousness be a witness to others, even if it attracts opposition or envy.
Recognize the Consequences of Jealousy: Be mindful of how jealousy can lead to destructive behavior, both in yourself and others. Seek to celebrate the successes of others rather than feeling threatened by them, and trust that God has a unique plan for your life.
