Jabez’s Appeal for Protection – “Keep me from harm

1 Chronicles 4:10d

The final part of Jabez’s prayer is a request for protection: “… and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” This request reflects Jabez’s awareness of the challenges and dangers that accompany life, and his desire for God’s protection.

Exegetical Viewpoints

• Protection from Harm: Jabez’s request for protection is a plea for God’s safeguarding against physical, emotional, and spiritual harm. He recognizes that life is filled with trials and temptations that can lead to pain and suffering, and he asks God to shield him from these challenges.
• Freedom from Pain: Given the meaning of his name, Jabez’s request to be “free from pain” is particularly poignant. It suggests a desire to rise above the circumstances of his birth and to live a life marked by God’s peace and wholeness. This part of the prayer reveals Jabez’s trust in God’s ability to protect him from the pain that his name might suggest he would endure.
