The Parable of the Lost Coin, Luke 15:8-10

Scripture · Luke 15:8-10

8Or what woman who has ten silver coins and loses one of them does not light a lamp, sweep her house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9And when she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors to say, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost coin.’ 10In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.”

The second parable in Luke 15 is that of the Lost Coin. Jesus says, “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?” (Luke 15:8). In this parable, the woman’s diligent search for the lost coin represents God’s persistent and careful effort to find those who are lost. Upon finding the coin, the woman calls her friends and neighbors together to celebrate, saying, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.” Jesus concludes, “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:9-10).

Exegetical Viewpoints
